Car runs over woman in wheelchair while she was trying to get inside house

A 60-year-old Cedar Rapids woman died from injuries received after getting run over last week when she was hit by an SUV in her front yard while in her wheelchair.

Police identified the woman’s next of kin on Monday.

According to KCRG-TV, Sergeant Cristy Hamblin said that officials believe the woman was either crossing the street or trying to go inside the house when she was struck by a late model Chevy Blazer, left running by the driver.

She says the victim was using a cane at the time.

Hamblin confirmed to Fox 16 the driver was a young woman who was treated and released at a hospital.

A family member said the woman had been in the hospital for several weeks and survived, but then lapsed into a coma.

Hamblin told Fox 16 the family has been waiting for police to respond with more information. The victim’s daughter said the suspect will likely not face additional charges at this time.

The incident is still under investigation.

Fox 16 reports that the driver left the scene of the accident, but was later picked up by police in Coralville. She was later charged with fleeing.

It’s not clear how serious the driver’s injuries are.
