Chuck Schumer, the New York senator and liberal Democrat, announced that his father had died at the age of 98.

Schumer made the announcement in a series of Tweets on Friday night from his New York City office.

“Chuck Jr is heartbroken to tell you that after a long battle with a rare disease, his dad, Senator Abe Schumer, has passed away,” Schumer said.

Schumer did not provide details of his father’s illness, or where in the state he was or what the cause of death was.

The senator’s father, Abe, is the founder of the storied bowling alley Lanes Lizards in Long Island. The gym in the Lizards’ building opened in 1961.

Schumer said in one tweet that his father and former New York mayor Ed Koch had met on Lanes Lizards days.

“I’m so proud to say my dad spent his entire career fighting for working people, keeping New York strong and showing the world what America truly is all about,” Schumer wrote.
