Kevin Lee: Giants set to make a Super Bowl leap..?

Great job by the New York Giants this week in free agency…good job to the new front office.. good to Giants fans, right?..

Not so fast…

Let’s go back to 2016 when the Browns welcomed a new coach, general manager and all and prepared to change the team’s culture..

When the 2017 season started, the Browns went 5-11 under 5 different coaches and almost all of those players did not make the trip to Ohio in 2018.

Now what does this mean?

I have spent years of my life studying the Patriots and looking for ways they got better every year since they began winning division championships. Not only did Bill Belichick and his team do that, but he took the Patriots to 5 Super Bowls and won three of them.

So yeah, the Super Bowl games won by the Pats shows what winning teams do and the only way to guarantee you’ll win one of those games is to win games in the regular season..

Let’s get into Pat Shurmur and his new organization in a moment…but first think about last year’s Browns and how they look so much better now that we have been through it.

Where was the Offensive Coordinator back then?

Where were the 2nd & 3rd Year Quarterbacks?

Where were the Tight Ends & Running Backs?

And most of all, where were the Yards?

The Browns finished dead last in the NFL in total yards last year.

For a team that won a game and finished at the bottom of the AFC North, they sure seem like they are in way over their heads..?

Keep that in mind when looking at the Giants and their offensive possibilities under Shurmur.

Couple that with rookie Head Coach Deandre Pressley and a bevy of personnel moves made this offseason……this team will probably be better than the Browns were and it’s easy to understand why.

The move to bring Shurmur in was made for one reason and that is to change the culture, improve the team and turn the franchise into winners.

The days of the Bobby Petrino’s at the University of Louisville and the Rex Ryan’s in New York are over.

Pat Shurmur will be a good head coach because of what I just wrote……but it will take time to change this franchise..

It will be 6 years until Shurmur’s first season, then it will be 8…,then 10…and then it will be 6 more years until Shurmur leads the Giants to their first winning season in a very long time..?

That’s a major step in the right direction..?

All of the things Browns fans have suffered thru over the last few years haven’t been that terrible, but the games were on the brink of turning into disaster, especially those late ones in the first quarter.

In short, it took injuries, suspensions and coaching errors, but the Browns did go from not taking the first step in the right direction to taking several in the right direction.

I think we all understand that Pat Shurmur can help to shape the fortunes of this franchise.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants make the playoffs in 2019 and why not?

But do they make it?

The odds are against them…

All you have to do is look at the Browns.

They have a new General Manager, new Head Coach, new Offense..new Defense, then their starting quarterback was traded after he was set to play a game and one of their two leading rushers went down..???

The Steelers are favored to win the Super Bowl, don’t get me wrong..But if a team’s starting quarterback won’t be able to start a game, isn’t that a big problem?

Did you see Tony Romo’s debut as a play caller?

I watched the game and I wasn’t in the know, but I know what he said…

If you watch the game and don’t know what he said..then it makes sense that he said it.

A lot of guys say the same thing and throw the game away..?

But yes, he was terrible.

Is that why they won?

I am not saying that the Giants will be terrible, but it will be one of the very few teams that won’t be close to a Super Bowl in 2019.

It will be a huge step for Shurmur, but I think it’s going to take a while to get there.
